Upcoming Events, Current Projects...

> I am currently working on a memoir titled, Shake the Soul. It will detail what it's like to get diagnosed with cancer... and rediagnosed... and rediagnosed... and diagnosed yet again. The treatments, the emotion, the ability to still laugh, the fear of death, and the amazement that is organ transplantation. And what it's like to compete at the world's premiere endurance event in Hawaii after having survived all of that.

> I am back to training six days a week for the 2010 Kona Ironman. It will be run on October 9, 2010 - one day before the fourth anniversary of my heart transplant.

> I have partnered with a variety of organizations to help promote organ donation and healthy active living.

> June 6, 2010, I will return to my home state for Ironman Kansas 70.3. This half-Ironman distance race is run in and around Lawrence, KS - about 30 miles from Kansas City.

I am a writer. Click ahead to the page “My Writing” and you can read about the two books that I’ve written that are currently in bookstores and for sale on Amazon.com. If you, like me, believe that sports is fun and quite often funny and ridiculous, then these books are for you. They’re great reads, but also great gifts, perfect bookshelf fillers, and brightly colored office accoutrements.

I also write a weekly sports blog that will cover whatever topic is in the news, or whatever strikes my fancy at that moment that I write it.


I am a motivational speaker. And no, it has nothing to do with my sports writing. In my entirely unrelated journey to sports and journalism I am a four-time survivor of two different kinds of cancer (Hodgkin’s disease and leukemia) as well as being a heart transplant recipient (which should explain the “recycled heart.”) If you are interested in reading more about my battles with cancer and heart disease please check out the page “My Health History.” Or if you’d like to hire me as a motivational speaker, read about my motivational speaking, or if you’re just killing time on the internet and are willing to read anything, please check out the page “My Speaking.”

I’m also a triathlete. Although I readily admit that there are probably more than a few triathletes who would balk at my inclusion among them. Eleven months after my heart transplant, with the help of the Team In Training program, I crossed the finish line of my first race, the 2007 Nautica Malibu Triathlon. Since then I have done more events, longer races, and I’m now currently training for my biggest challenge yet, the Kona Ironman. That’s a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and then a full 26.2 mile marathon.
